The next morning, a young priest dressed in a dark cassock with a cowl approached the Leipzig town hall and addressed the guards,

“Good Catholics[xlvi], tell me, is this the central town hall of the famous town of Leipzig?”

The guards exchanged glances.

“Yes, holy father.”

“Then tell me, faithful Catholics, is this where the terrible monster who had killed many innocent women is kept?”

“Yes, holy father. The Black Sorcerer is sentenced to be burnt at the stake tomorrow at noon.”

The priest crossed himself.

“Thank God! The punishment of our Lord has found him!”

“You speak the truth, holy father,” the guards agreed.

“My good sons!” the priest addressed the guards. “I am abbot Peter Steinbrück from the temple in Mürkel. I have come a long way to bring the lost soul back to the Holy Church. The soul is immortal and I, as a true servant of the church, am obliged to do everything in order to save it. I am obliged to give an opportunity for repentance even to a monster like the Black Sorcerer.”

The priest took out two gold coins, showed them to the guards, bent over and put one into each guard’s boot. The guards were confused. They were unable to tighten their boots all the way and why had the holy father done that?

The priest straightened his back and the guards stared at him with wide eyes.

“Take me to the Black Sorcerer. I want to personally put him on the right path before he is executed. You can search me; I am a minister of the church which means I do not carry any weapons. My weapon is God’s word.”

The guards did not dare to search the priest. One winked to the other,

“Take him to the jailor. Tell him beer is on us.”

Erik gave his face a serious, but at the same time sweet expression which, in his opinion, distinguished priests from ordinary people.
